- 2 T. butter
- 2 T. flour
- 1-1/2 c. milk
- 1/2 c. vegetable or low sodium chicken broth
- 2 t. dried thyme
- 2 lb. potatoes, freshly and evenly sliced, 1/8-1/4” thick
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1-1/2 c. gouda cheese, grated

Step-by-step Guide:
1 – Preheat the oven to 400° F and lightly grease a casserole dish.
2 – Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
3 – Add flour and cook, whisking constantly, for 1-2 minutes to cook out the raw taste in the flour.
4 – Slowly pour in the milk and broth, whisking constantly. Cook until mixture thickens, approximately 4-5 minutes.
5 – Remove from heat and stir in the dried thyme. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
6 – Layer half of the potatoes in the casserole dish, top with half of the sliced onion, half of the cream sauce, and half of the gouda cheese.

8 – Cover the casserole with aluminum foil and place in the oven to bake for 40 minutes.
9 – Remove from oven, uncover, and bake for another 30-40 minutes, or until deeply golden brown on top.
10 – Allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
11 – Enjoy!
Pro Tips for Success:
-
Thin, Even Slices Matter: For the best texture, slice your potatoes as evenly as possible. This helps them cook uniformly, giving you that perfect creamy, melt-in-your-mouth experience. If you have a mandoline slicer, use it! It will give you consistent, thin slices of potatoes.
-
Use Freshly Grated Cheese: Freshly grated gouda and parmesan melt better and have a richer flavor than pre-shredded cheese, which often contains anti-caking agents.
-
Add a Garlic Boost: For a flavor twist, add a minced garlic clove to the cream sauce. It will give your scalloped potatoes a subtle, savory depth that pairs perfectly with the cheese.
These Perfect Scalloped Potatoes will add a deliciously creamy touch to any event!
They’re simple, comforting, and guaranteed to make your guests smile.
Whether you’re making them for a cozy family gathering or a fun celebration, you can’t go wrong with this dish.
